We are proud to announce that Laésha Smith is featured in the Winter 2026 edition of Advocacy Matters in a compelling interview that highlights her perspectives and experience on equity, inclusion, and leadership in the legal profession.

In conversation with Sahil Shoor, Laésha shares reflections on her two decades of experience as a Black woman in the legal profession and how those experiences guide and inform her work as an advocate. She speaks candidly about navigating professional spaces where representation has historically been limited, and how those experiences informed her understanding of access and opportunity. Laésha argues that the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion require intentional and sustained effort, not just slogans, celebratory months, or one-off training sessions.

DEI work that generates lasting change looks different. It is built into core processes (recruitment, evaluations, compensation, courtroom staffing and leadership selection) so that unconscious biases are not allowed to operate unchecked. It involves regular, sometimes uncomfortable reflection on how race and gender show up in day-to-day practice: who is interrupted in court, whose judgments are second-guessed, whose ‘polish’ is questioned and whose mistakes are quietly forgiven.”

Laésha’s insights underscore the idea that inclusion is not a passive goal, but an active and ongoing practice that can only result in strengthening the profession.  Equity and inclusion require that all of us spend time confronting our assumptions of what belonging and excellence in the law look and sound like.

“Making space for more authentic expressions of identity is not cosmetic; it is part of dismantling the barriers that have kept talented people from thriving in courtrooms and law firms.”

The Advocacy Matters feature offers readers a frank and insightful look at how lived experience can shape leadership in powerful ways. It is a call to action; one that requires us to move beyond platitudes and performance. We invite you to read the full interview to learn more about Laésha’s vision for a more inclusive future in the practice of law.
